Amoy Plaza UA Cinema: A New Vision in Design

East Kowloon's Award-Winning Cinema by Penny Chan

Penny Chan, the creative director behind this project, drew inspiration from the forthcoming East Kowloon Cultural Centre. The idea was to present the cinema as an exhibition centre concept, providing a fresh perspective for the local community. The project, which started in April 2017 and concluded in August 2018, was carried out in Hong Kong.

The design of Amoy Plaza UA Cinema stands out for its unique properties. The environment is predominantly black, contrasted with a white marble wall. The cinema features three theatres with over 600 seats, all furnished with Ferco leather seats and upgraded with the Barco 4K laser projection system. The cinema also boasts a multi-purpose function room, equipped with projectors, stereos, games consoles, and table games, offering a versatile space for parties and gatherings.

The design process was not without its challenges. One of the major hurdles was to turn the numerous column positions into an advantage through decoration. The design team also conducted extensive research on the reflection of different glasses to increase the sense of space and used different lights to enhance the mystery of the environment.

Despite these challenges, the design team's efforts were rewarded. The Amoy Plaza UA Cinema was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in 2019. This award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation. The designs that win this award are admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcasing a remarkable level of excellence and eliciting positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
